I’ve just been doing a bit of a crash course in beavers. I thought they were indigineous only to North America, but I was wrong – although the European beaver was hunted to extinction, it is being reintroduced and after seeing pictures of it, I think I mistook one for a particularly large muscrat a couple of years ago … but I digress. In the 17th century, the Roman Catholic Church declared beavers to be a fish, and therefore a perfectly valid menu choice on Friday during Lent. And why am I boning up on beaver lore? Because of this adorable little fella:
Yesterday afternoon, the mailman brought us a mysterious box from a mystery sender – no return address! – which I quickly opened to discover was from Ruth. She sent me these lovely goodies – and I was just admiring these spool finishes the other day!! – including this beaver fetish carved from pipestone by a member of the Zuni Nation. How cool is that? I’ve enjoyed the pictures of her badger fetishes, and now I have a little North American beaver fetish of my very own. Because Rowen’s already tried to steal it from me, he’s sitting up high with my babushka dolls. Sort of a summit conference up there above the TV … Ruth, thank you very much for your generosity and thougtfulness! I really love this little guy!
