friday fun with annemarie

Waaaayyy back a bunch of years ago, when I first got back into stitching and was looking for some inspiration I came across Annemarie’s online gallery. She was so wonderful about sharing information with me, encouraging me, and just being all-around fabulous … and yet, I think nearly two years went by before we actually met face-to-face. We’ve been fortunate enough to see a fair bit of one another in the years since then, and it will be difficult to accept the fact that we won’t be able to see each other so easily in the upcoming years. But … you know when friends are really true friends of the heart, distance just doesn’t matter. I know that’s how it’ll be for Annemarie and me. After all, we were already friends long before we first got together IRL, so why should an ocean between us make a dent in our friendship?

annemarie's visit

We even got a little bit of stitching done while she was here. :D I could admire the lovely BBD sampler she’s working on for her parents and I put the last couple of stitches into a small design I was making for one of my aunts. Actually, I’ve now managed to stitch something for each of my Mom’s sisters – kinda surprised myself with that. ;) I won’t be able to do the finish-finishing till I’m in the US (no finishing supplies) but I should still have them done in time for Christmas. Not too bad for a last-minute thought. Of course now I feel a little guilty that I can’t make something for ALL the wonderful family and friends who deserve a handmade gift, but heck, there are only so many hours in the day, right?

For Aunt Kathy, who’ll be picking us up and housing us that first night in Maine, I stitched a lighthouse design from a Dimensions kit. Didn’t like the kit, but did like the design. Kathy collects lighthouses.

For Aunt Joyce, who’ll also meet us at the airport and help us find our way to our rental house, I stitched this sweetie designed by Niky’s Creations and called simply Yo-Yo #3. Aunt Joyce has a doll collection, and this was the closest I could come to a doll from the designs I didn’t ship.

For Aunt Cindy, who I hope will help me become a better Dog Mommy to Lola in the future, I stitched this too-cute design from Blue Whale Designs called Santa’s Parade. Cindy loves all animals, and knows more about animals than pretty much anyone I’ve ever met. (Lola has a few persistent behavioral problems that I’m pretty much stumped by and I hope a fresh perspective will help out.)

At the moment I’m stitching a Christmas ornament for Niek. And then … it’s a good thing I’ll be stuck on a plane because I’ll be pretty much out of stuff to stitch! LOL!

The kids have had their last day of school and said goodbye to everyone. I’ve been so touched by how sweet some of their classmates are, and by how much the kids are liked by their friends and teachers. Rowen’s party was yesterday afternoon and was as fun as Nick’s. Max’s was Thursday morning, but parents and cameras were banned at his request. Gotta respect their privacy … but I wish I’d been able to peek in. ;)

nick says goodbye

Today was Nick’s goodbye party at school, and boy was it fun! One teacher had made a wonderful photo collage of all the kids, another made a DVD of all the kids talking about Nick as if they were being interviewed, and the third had arranged a special dance show (performed by classmates). Nick and Arden got to sit up in front for the party and truly felt like big shots. I hope Rowen’s party on Thursday is as entertaining! (Max doesn’t want me showing up at his with my camera, boo hoo.) Here are a few of my favorite photos from the party.

resurfacing, with lots to share

Oh, what a week it’s been! Nearly everyone here at Chateau Chaos came down with a stomach bug and some of us still aren’t feeling 100% but we’re all at least feeling better than we did.

lazy days

Because life doesn’t stop just because you feel awful, a lot was going on during our Sick Week.

The international movers came and took all our good stuff away. (Ugh, I lost the picture of Arden amidst the boxes!)

I finished and posted my Christmas exchange (and my partner has received it). The stitching part of the exchange was pretty skimpy because I just didn’t have any decent finishing  materials and my creativity had fled the scene, so I tried to make up for it by packing in lots of other goodies. Chris assures me she’s happy with it, but I always have such performance anxiety with these things! (This is the Vautier freebie I mentioned recently, btw, stitched in HDF Gandy Dancer silk on HDF 36 ct linen.)

I finished a UFO. This darling design, Fair, Kind, True,  is by Deborah of Midsummer Night Designs. I’ve stitched it on a high count of Lakeside Linens Tallahassee Teal using Paper Roses premium silk by Vikki Clayton. I suspect it will reappear around our wedding anniversary in May, hopefully transformed into something lovely.

I also finished A Winter’s Nap by Erica Michaels. I had to make a few changes to the suggested colors, as they didn’t show up on this ivory banding. The banding was a total PITA to work with and I’m not satisfied with the coverage, although in the end it doesn’t look as bad as I’d feared it would.

And I finished Beth Twist’s adorable A Partrige, A Pare & A Turtledove design. I converted the called-for DMC to HDF silks and stitched it on 36 ct Cream HDF linen. I also corrected the spelling because the deliberate misspelling glared out at me and detracted from my enjoyment of the design. I love this one and plan to keep it.

Heartstring Designs

And last but far from least, we celebrated pakjesavond. It was a quieter affair than usual with fewer gifts, less noise, and Max’s absence was keenly felt, but we had fun anyway.

Sinterklaas pakjesavond

To catch up on mundane matters, my computer is d-e-a-d. Niek’s taking it work to try to salvage the lost data, but it’s a serious PITA because of course I don’t know all my passwords, usernames, etc. and emailing is a nightmare from Niek’s PC. I haven’t spent much time online due to the frustration of nothing working like I want it to, and of course because I’ve felt sort of craptastic all week.

Niek’s work visa came in and he’s now able to enter the US. He’s booked tickets for himself and the pets and will arrive in time for Christmas. Hooray!

The upcoming week will be filled with the kids’ going-away parties for school and extra-curricular groups, and I’ll hopefully see a last couple of friends (fingers crossed!). I’m cheating and buying treats for the kids’ parties, but I figure this one time it’s okay not to go homemade all the way. ;)

Thanks so much for stopping in to visit with me! :D

overwhelming!

I’m at Niek’s computer again because mine is ready for a eulogy. Niek’s going to try some black magic on it to at least get stuff saved to our external backup thingie, but … it’s not looking good. :( I have introduced my camera to his ‘ puter, though, and they like each other, so here’s a little bit of visual interest for you. ;)

I opened my Do Not Open Till December envelope from Katrina and found this sweet ornament and card. Katrina and I have been in two Quaker RRs together and I hope we’ll do another in 2010. Thanks, Katrina!

I also finished my version of the Gift of Stitching challenge. I stitched the design over on on 38 or 40 ct R&R linen (from a grab bag, so I don’t know the color) using GAST Blackboard and made it into a wee necklace for my favorite girl. :D It’s about as big as my thumbnail. The backside has the same heart outline, but with Rowen’s initials. She didn’t want to take it off for bed. My first attempt at this sort of thing, and I was dependent on the very scanty supplies available from the local craft shop, but I will try this again in the future. (In trying not to close her eyes in a photo, Rowen now squints. Not really a big improvement, LOL.)

Thank you for your overwhelming advice to keep the name of the blog unchanged. And for your wonderful wishes for the upcoming weeks! :D You’re the greatest!!

monday morning, so far

This will be the busiest week before our departure. There are several appointments to bid farewell to dear friends, flu shots to be had, sports and activities for the kids, and then this weekend we’ll have the chaos of the final packing. Yikes, huh? But for some reason, this morning has gotten off to a slow, easy-going start. Arden and I are enjoying each other’s company while outside the wind howls and rain pelts down. At breakfast, Rowen told us all the most imaginative story about her experiences skateboarding with our cat and some time-traveling dinosaurs.  I should finish up the finishing on my ornament exchange and get that posted out nice & early. I should also do some housework. But maybe first, I’ll just enjoy a few more pages in the crime thriller I’m reading. ;)

Wishing you a wonderful week!

tiny treasures

Rowen and Lucia

Enjoyed a fine evening with good friends. We have daughters nearly the same age, and as you can see, they got on very well together. :) I hope your weekend has also been brightened by some tiny treasures. :D

the midweek hump

I had a great time chatting online with an old friend on Facebook last night; the downside being that I didn’t do any stitching. LOL. When I finally called it a night, the thought was running through my head, ‘What on earth will I blog about tomorrow?’ After spending all my time in the company of sick kids, I was sure there was nothing to talk about.

But then I got up to this spectacular show from Mother Nature. This picture isn’t edited – that was really what the sky looked like during breakfast this morning. Incredible, huh?

And these were the not-quite-so-sick monkeys I had breakfast with.

Rowen begins to feel better

Actually, as you can see by this picture snapped before bedtime yesterday, Arden’s mostly recovered. Mozart’s got nothing on him, huh? ;)

Then when I opened my computer, I found that Kirsten has started the biweekly challenge at the Gift of Stitching blog. Go look! Join in!

And for those who just llloooovvve Isa Vautier’s amazing designs (and is there anyone who doesn’t?), go over here to look at an amazing SAL you can join in.

Looks like Wednesday might not be such a bad day after all. ;)

sinterklaas

One of the nice things about new-to-me blog readers is getting questions about annual events that I’ve explained before. Each time I explain something, I also understand it a little bit better myself. Every year, I get questions about Sinterklaas and every year I feel I’ve come a little bit closer to understanding the tradition properly. ;)

(This post shows pictures of us on Saturday evening celebrating Sinterklaas’ arrival in the Netherlands – singing, setting out the shoes, leaving carrots for Sinterklaas’ horse, and just being silly.)

Nick and Niek sing it out

Here in the Netherlands, it’s traditional to give holiday gifts (particularly to children) around this time of year in association with the Sinterklaas legend. Many families do not give gifts on Christmas day; instead that’s a day to spend with family, observing religious practices, or simply enjoying a few days off (because here there are two days of Christmas!). Sinterklaas arrives in the Netherlands about three weeks before 5 December on a steamboat that’s travelled from his headquarters in Spain. This is called his intocht, or arrival, and there are parades and all sorts of fun to be enjoyed during the special day. During the weeks before 5 December, he and his helpers (Zwarte Pieten) are visible all over the place – kids can pose with Sinterklaas to ask for their heart’s desire (much like Santa Claus in a mall) and the antics of the Zwarte Pieten are always good for a laugh. At night, kids can set a shoe out to be filled during the night with candy or small toys. Our kids, who also celebrate an American-style Christmas, don’t get to set their shoes out that often – we’d be overrun by the bounty of the season, or in the poor house! The fun and activity build up to the Big Event on 5 December, pakjesavond,  when Sinterklaas and his helpers go house-to-house with surprise gifts and edible treats. Everyone celebrates this a little differently, but in our house we sing very loudly before bedtime and our songs let Sinterklaas know we’re ready. ;) There’ll be a bang and a crash and somehow one of our doors will fly open and a sack of gifts will sail into our midst with lots of cookies and treats scattering around. By the time we have a chance to react, there’s no one to be seen because Sinterklaas has a lot of houses to visit before the evening is done and time is of the essence. (We are so grateful to our wonderful neighbors for their annual assistance!)

arden arranges the carrots

There’s also a tradition of creating a surprise gift with a poem about the recipient, but because our kids are still fairly young, we don’t often try this. For some tidbits on the history and customs of Sinterklaas, this website has some different information, though I can’t vouch for its accuracy.  A more complete story can be found here.

stitching and sickness

I’d hoped to do lots of stitching while I was without a ‘puter, and it was actually a very productive period – I not only did some stitching but I also did some designing and writing. All on paper, so now I have the joy of putting it on the ‘puter, but hey, no one said life was perfect. LOL. Here are the three ornaments I stitched on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. :) All are stitched on 36 ct white HDF linen using Vikki’s silks in my choice of colors (but selected to resemble the models).

ornaments collage

On a less happy note, the Bug returned during this period, too and both Arden and Rowen are once again ill. My poor babies. I’d so gladly absorb it from them, be sick in their places, if only such a thing were possible. Arden, as I type this, seems to be on the mend again but it appears that Rowen will be spending several more days at home with mama.

sick kids

There was also the excitement of Sinterklaas making his appearance in the Netherlands, but I’ll save something for tomorrow’s post. Thanks for continuing to visit with me despite a few days of rather dry posts. To those who enjoyed the poem yesterday, thanks for commenting. I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but I do love the way a finely-wrought poem gets me thinking … and then keeps me thinking. ;)

Take care, all. Stay healthy!

lemonade

So … the kids had a day off school yesterday (teacher workshops) and we had a showing scheduled. What a combination – get the house showroom-ready with all four kids at home and then skedaddle with kids and dogs before the showing. Well, thanks to Max’s help, the house was nearly ready at 11:00 – only the floors needed washing – when the phone rang. Yep, you guessed it: the realtor said the people wanted to reschedule for Wednesday! Groan!! It was too late to take the kids any where special to enjoy a day off school, so we headed over to McDonalds where the kids could play and relax (and make as much mess as they wanted, LOL!).

and while i was making lemonade

… dear friend Anne has been busy making the most gorgeous fobs you can imagine. Not only are they gorgeous, but they can be yours! Anne’s selling her beautiful fobs to help raise money for Coral’s grandson, Tim. Coral’s also a good friend who’s been mentioned many a time here in this blog. Her wee Tim has been diagnosed with leukemia and, as you can imagine, the medical bills are staggering. I’m giving Anne a standing ovation for her efforts and I’m hoping that you’ll stock up on some great gifts, stocking-stuffers, or even a little trinket for yourself. You know, a gift for sewing well, to borrow from Mary Garry.

Take care, all, and thank you so much for coming to visit with me! :D
