Did anyone else, as a kid, spend lots of Sundays visiting their grandparents? As I remember it, we spent nearly every Sunday with one set of grandparents or another and it was usually great good fun. (Okay, I will admit that I remember being bored out of my wits from time to time, but my brother and I usually created some adventure if nothing else came up.) Anyway, yesterday we spent a very pleasurable afternoon visiting Niek’s parents and his grandmother. I really love doing family stuff like that.
I took over 50 pictures (!) but I’ll spare you and only show one collage.
And, hold on to your hats, some stitching has been done. When I saw this freebie from Plum Street Samplers, I pulled out a piece of linen and my little orts box and got right to work on it. I haven’t stitched the ‘bok bok’ part of the design because I’m thinking of making this into a 2-sided ornament and putting that part on the back. I blended threads to try to create an overdyed look. I’m not sure I really succeeded, but I had fun trying. (Excuse me for not ironing this before taking a photo.)
The linen is white 35 ct HDF linen that I abused first with Chinese herbal dregs and then with a wild concotion that included red onion skins and chestnut shells. It’s dyed, overdyed, and then rinsed out (becasue it came out too dark). The many shades give the larger piece of linen a really nice depth, but I like my smaller, first experiment better. Sigh…
Today’s showing number three on our house. Please cross your fingers and toes for a sale!

What a fun weekend you all had! It looks like Arden is finally over his flu, which: hooray!
Love, love, love Bok Bok and will go and look for the freebie NOW. You did a fabulous job with the mixed threads, I always love how that works out. And your fabric looks good to me…

Oh Barbara, I have been reading all your posts about cleaning and such for the sale of your home and it brings back such painful memories of when we sold our first home three and half years ago. Ellie was a baby and we had to keep the house in perfect condition so that anyone that wanted to see it could walk through. We were lucky, though, ours sold in four days and then everything could go back to being hell in a handbasket
Wishing you much luck!!! Cause I know the pain in the rear it causes with keeping a house perfect and 4 little mess makers….

Oh what fun with the grandparents! We used to visit my husband’s parents with the kids every or every other Saturday, not Sunday.
And your Bok Bok! Great stuff! I love the colors!

I remember all of those Sundays visiting relatives. I especially remember wiping wet kisses off my face with the back of my hand! Looks like a fun day.
The turkey is the cutest and I love your colors. I saved that one and a couple of others. Not sure if I’ll get to them this year, but maybe I’ll slip them in, especially now that I see how cute yours is.

Great Sunday collage! It looks like a fabulous day visiting with relatives. Good luck with your house sale. Arden has grown into such a cute little boy – he doesn’t look like a baby any more!

I love your little collage. We used to go to my Uncle Bill’s most Sundays from NJ out to Long Island which took some time I can tell you but I used to love it. My grandpa only lived next door so until I was 10 I saw him every day and then he passed away. What a great photo collage you have given us. Arden looks so happy.
Love

We did not visit with grandparents on Sundays because we live in NB and the grandparents lived in Toronto and Washington DC, but as adult children we visit with my nephew and Mom on Sundays. It is a rare Sunday evening when we are not all around the dining room table.

They say third time’s a charm. Good luck with the showing.

If I close my eyes I can remember the old steep, narrow , twisitng staircase in my grandparent’s rowhouse in Newark, New Jersey. I can smell the tomato sauce and various spiced meats and sausages cooking. I can here the voices of the old aunts chattering in Italian. I remember the beautiful crystal candy jar gleaming with M&M’s…our house never had candy! I would sit for hours and stitch doll clothes under the watchful eye of my grandfather, a retired tailor. The old aunts and uncles would dote on me because I was the only grandchild who did things “in the old way”…stitching, knitting, gardening. All my cousins ran wild up and down the porch steps from my aunt’s apartment, to my grandparent’s and then back up to the roof. I prefered to try on the sparkingly wedding crown that my Aunt Janice wore in 1962.
Thank you Barbara for bringing back these treasured memories.

Yes, every Sunday we spent at grandparents…we had Sunday lunch after church with my dad’s parents
After my grandfather died and all of us youger kids grew up and started our own families we kinda got away from that….I think we should bring it back
We DO still have EVERY Thanksgiving at my grandmothers as well as one day during the Christmas holidays where ALL the kids and grandkids come together-It’s a huge crowd-It’s the BEST kind of family time
I LOVE that time of year
Again such LOVELY pictures
hugs to you

I have some very fond memories of visiting my Grandma (my Mums Mum). She had a sprawling backyard, just your average size but it was filled with all sorts of plants and shrubs. I had lots of hiding places so all of the grandkids played hide-and-seek. My Mum was one of eight so family gatherings were huge!!! Gran would have us all there for Christmas, do all of the cooking etc, I don’t know how she managed.

Don’t turkeys gobble?
While my cousins went to my grandparents every weekend, my father never wanted to go to his parents–since he spent the whole week working with my grandfathers. Family business, it’s a relationship killer. We were always with my maternal grandmother, whether it was dinner out or a shopping excursion. Even family vacations, despite the fact that my mother agreed every year when my father said, “I am not taking your mother anywhere ever again!” (He started saying that when I went off to college. He still says it 20+ years later.)
Of course, we Pennsylvanian Alexas get together every Sunday for dinner now. With the dogs. And unfortunately, sometimes the gerbils.

Just one grandfather.

I absolutely love the concept of a family dinner that includes dog and gerbils!
