For me, 2008 stitching is over and 2009 has begun. And although I have no delusions about being as successful as Karen has been with WIP and stash busting (congratulations, Karen!), I am looking forward to moving along with a few big projects, UFO projects, and family projects. As well as some stuff I just plain ol’ want to do. And I’m trying to get started right by working on this Helga Mandl design (from an older seasonal SAL) that will become a scissor and needlebook gift for Max’s birthday. I had intended to stitch all four seasons, but this really isn’t my usual taste in designs and I figure if I get the spring design done (as his birthday is in spring) and then stitch the names of the season on the backside, he’ll be happy with it.
I’m also planning to make him a sewing roll, using this wonderful design from primitivebettys. I actually bought it about a year ago, intending to do it right away … well, better late than never, and I will certainly enjoy stitching this.
Max is wild about rabbits, having a sweet little attack bunny of his own, so if time permits, I will also stitch a fob or pinkeep for him, and I have just the pattern for it from The Goode Huswife.
But other kids also have birthdays coming up, and sooner than Max’s! I’ll need to finish Rowen’s unicorn cushion and whip together the duvet cover that coordinates with it. Again, this is something I bought the supplies for an embarassingly long time ago but it kept getting shifted to the side as other, seemingly more important stitching issues arose. And to my surprise, Nicky has become very interested and curious about the projects I’ve been working on so I’m thinking that maybe I should try to make something for his birthday, too. I have a very cool pattern of Snoopy decked out as The Flying Ace … somewhere. I could cobble together a sort of pillow for him, too. I could!
And stitching has become a whole lot easier for me all of a sudden, thanks to the gift from my better half. Although I think he already seriously regrets this, as the light cast by the Daylight bulb at night interferes a lot with TV viewing. Hopefully when we rearrange the living room after the Christmas tree is removed, we’ll be able to work out a better arrangement. But last night, when I used it for the first time, I could not believe how easy it was to see everything. Not just the correct colors, but the holes in the fabric suddenly showed up as if they were under magnification. This is the best purchased gift of the year, IMHO.
There are a few homemade gifts still to share, though! Isabelle surprised me to no end by sending these adorable t-shirts for Arden’s birthday. She’d told me she was making a gift for him some months back, but with her dissertation, Seb’s job, and their upcoming move, I assumed she would not have time. Thank you, Isabelle! We love them!!
And Max made these ornaments for Niek and I for Christmas all by himself.
The kids are feeling steadily better. Nicky is laughing more than whining now, which is such a relief to me. I don’t handle whining children very well – is that surprising, coming from a mother of four? Arden’s also recovering, though the ugly spots across his face (not unlike chicken pox, but the doc says it’s a bacterial infection caused by the mucus) are slow in going away. He’s still a regular little snot factory, so I guess it’ll take awhile longer. Rowen’s doing well, knock on wood! I’ve kept myself busy in the quieter hours by working on some more articles for TGOSM due to appear in the spring.
Wishing you days of peace and love as the New Year approaches!!

Your new light sounds great!
Your 2009 stitching plans are the same as mine. Good luck to you, will look forward to watching all your progress!

Glad to hear the children are recovering from their latest rounds of winter colds. What lovely gifts you are stitching up for Max.
I read your article on Bargello in TGOSM – very interesting! Such a multitalented person.

I’m so glad for you that you now have a decent light to stitch by – yay! I hope you get many stitching hours in 2009, I’m really looking forward to seeing what you’ll be stitching.
Glad everyone is feeling better – Max did a great job on his ornaments for you and Niek too

I am so glad the kids are finally beginning to feel better! I love the ornaments Max made and your stitching is great! You have some goals similar to mine for the New Year!
December 28th, 2008 at 7:01 pm
Have fun with your 2009 stitching! The birthday gift for your son looks so sweet, and I can’t wait to see it finished. Won’t this be a nice surprise for him?
Lovely ornaments! I do hope the little ones feel better soon.
I am in the same frame of mind with stitching Barbara. I really think 2009 is going to be the year of the finish and organized!

Barbara,
It looks like your stitching for 2009 is off to a wonderful start.
The ornaments that Max made are really precious! He did a wonderful job on them. The gifts from Isabelle are great too!
I’m happy that the children are on the mend.
I send my warmest wishes to you, and your family for a happy and healthy 2009.

Those little shirts are too cute!
I’m glad the little ones are starting to feel relief. Arden actually looks much better.
) Cameron is still a snot and vomiting machine. He’s been on antibiotics since Dec. 11. I’m worried that’s going to make him ill.
Good luck on the 2009 stitching! I’m sure Max will love those rabbits. lol
Happy 2009!

I’m happy to read that the kids are feeling better, it sounded and looked like they were pretty miserable.
Max’s ornaments are really cool! I have to show them to my 10 year old.
December 28th, 2008 at 9:25 pm
Isn’t it funny that we both had stitching improvement posts? I was getting so frustrated and now I don’t have eye strain and I can stitch faster.
Glad the kiddos are on the mend. I was wondering about Arden’s face-he must have sensitive skin like most of my family, including me.
You have quite a few things you want to get to-I can’t wait to see them as you complete them. I too need to get down to the nitty gritty and to frame or finish things I’ve recently stitched.
Cute gifts for Arden too!

Good job with the ornaments Max!

The whole past year, I could not decide to buy the daylight lamp, you’re talking about. After reading your experience with it, I think I must buy one, now! I’m having troubles seeing in the evening, and this must solve the problem, isn’t it?
Happy New Year!
December 29th, 2008 at 12:27 am
What a wonderful daylight lamp! And you rock, with your projects and positive thoughts (and nary a whiny word of your own), all while managing a minor plague!
Yay, Max, on the ornaments! I’m trying to think of which Goode Huswife you’re talking about…

Love the pictures of the kids, they’re looking much better! What a nice surprise from Max, he’ll surprised by his mother in spring. Good luck with your 2009-stitching, I’m still busy with 2008…
December 29th, 2008 at 1:54 am
Oh, the kids look like they’re feeling much better – hurray! Congrats on the new light! I was astounded at the difference when I first got mine.
December 29th, 2008 at 2:42 am
Glad everyone is feeling better!!!!
I have an Ott-light so I know what you mean…Dh has one too (for reading)! Congrats!!!
December 29th, 2008 at 4:51 am
I got a light for Christmas too!
Glad your little ones are feeling and looking much better.

Hi Barbara,
Merry Christmas to you and Niek and the kids!! I can
see from the pictures and your writing that it was a
great day for all of you. The picture of Arden
playing with the wrapping paper is so cute, and so
typical. That old cliche about spending a fortune
on gifts for the kids and then watching them get the
most joy out of the boxes that they came in is so true.
But I’m so sorry to hear how sick all three of the boys
were. Poor Arden looks so miserable in some of the
pictures, and you said in those that he was looking
BETTER?? Eeekk! I’m glad that they’re all on the
road to recovery, and that Rowan didn’t catch it at
all (not to mention you and Niek) but what a lousy
time of the year to be sick.
Love those ornaments that Max made for you and Niek
for Christmas. Hmmm… looks like a case of like
Mother, like son to me. Especially that wonderful
Christmas tree. It’s obvious that the kids watch
you doing your crafty things and are very much
influenced by it.
I was thrilled to see the finish of Little Acts of
Kindness. It looks wonderful and I’ll bet Niek
loved it. I knew those charts were meant for you…
I just knew it!!! Ha!!!
Stitching lights are worth their weight in gold.
Yours looks really nice and I’m glad you’re so happy
with it. It’s amazing how much it improves your
stitching when you can actually SEE it.
Those shirts that Isabelle made for Arden are so
cute. I am amazed by her. She has so much going
on in her life, and yet makes the time to do such
wonderful, thoughtful things. Arden is going to be
one dapper looking little fella in these. Not to
mention extra adorable.
Your plans for stitching in 2009 are admirable. I
can’t do that. I’m very much an impulse stitcher.
I may think I’m going to stitch a certain design
when I finish my currant project, but come the time
to get out that next project I almost always end up
stitching something else entirely. I’m ready to get
a new travel project out now, and I have no idea
what it’ll end up being.
Did you get a white Christmas this year??? We did,
but only just barely. On boxing day it rained and
rained, and then the temperatures began to rise
and now there’s hardly any snow left on the ground.
It’s been a wild and crazy winter for weather so
far, and winter’s only just arrived!!! Oh Joy!!!
Hope you all have a wonderful New Years and my
love and best wishes for 2009.
Cheers!

Lovely stitching. I’m glad to hear everyone is steadily getting better
December 29th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
Max’s ornaments are so lovely. Such a nice gift for you. When I received my stitching light with magnifier a couple of years ago it was also an eye-opener to me, litterally, lol. From that moment on I could stitch on all sorts of counts without any problems. Enjoy your new lamp.
Glad to read that the kids are doing so much better.
Good luck with your stitching plans for 2009. I’m also thinking about my stitching yera at the moment and have similar plans.
December 29th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
Goodness you are going to be busy!! Max’s ornies are lovely. How nice to have your kids getting interested in stitching. x
December 29th, 2008 at 4:50 pm
My daylight lamp is my best friend too, I got mine last Christmas and it make such a difference! You’ll wonder how you managed to stitch without one soon
So glad your brood are beginning to get over their ills, lovely photos
Max’s ornies are too cute and lovely gifts from Isabelle too. You ladies put me to shame with all you get done!
December 29th, 2008 at 5:19 pm
You’ve got some lovely stitching projects planned. I love my daylight lamp, but it interfers with my husband’s tv viewing too, my solution is to lower it close to me and that seems to help.
So glad to hear that your kids are on the mend.

Hooray for your new lamp. You will love it. Those sure are cute t-shirts.
