Today was to be the first example of our new family program, in which either Niek or I spends a half day solely with one of our children. They’re getting older so fast, that I wanted to institute some one-on-one time to foster good relations with them in preparation for adolescence and all the sort of scary stuff like that that’s looming in our future. So Niek took Nicky to the pool – which is so incredibly close to our house that it’s laughable – and I took the other three kids downtown to continue our explorations of Gouda’s history. And this is how our day turned out. (“My” three are still intact, btw.)
As near as I can figure from the Dutch terms, it’s a green stick fracture; so it could be a lot worse. But it’s bad enough. For 8 days he cannot put any weight at all at any time on this foot. He can’t even go to the bathroom. Nothing. His foot needs to be elevated nearly all the time. Then we’ll have more X-rays done and they’ll decide if he gets a walking cast or has to remain completely off the foot. They refused to give any indication at all of a timeline.
How’d it happen? Niek let Nicky ride on the baggage rack on the back of his bike and Nicky’s foot became entangled in the spokes of the bike’s rear wheel. I almost threw up when Niek carried him after it happened. So for anyone out there thinking it would save a little bit of time to put a young child on the back of the bike rather than putting him or her properly into a child seat … remember this.

Oh no! That’s terrible! Hope it doesn’t put too much of a damper on his summer. That is a really cool cast though – I love the red!
07.31.08 at 8:30 pm
Oh no! Poor Nicky! I hope he heals soon – what a blow to your summer plans.
07.31.08 at 8:37 pm
Oh my! My stomach got all churny just reading what had happened. Poor Nicky!
And I’m betting Niek feels horrible as well.
If Nicky’s anything like my 5-yo, this whole bedrest thing will really test your patience…LOL! When she’s sick and limited to the couch, she has the uncanny ability to get extremely bossy and demanding. She knows how to milk a situation for all its worth.
07.31.08 at 8:44 pm
OMG Barbara! Big hugs for Nicky. I hope it heals soon and well. Is Niek still in one piece? I know Alan wouldn’t be.
07.31.08 at 9:13 pm
Is it drugs that makes him look like he’s enjoying this? I had a hard time staying off my foot for as long as I needed and I ostensibly understood the necessity! Good luck!
Hi Anna – He was so incredibly exhausted by this point that he just looked loopy. No drugs other than kids’ Tylenol.
07.31.08 at 9:34 pm
I saw the photo in Flickr first. I can’t stand to see little children laid up, but it’s the best for him right now. What a sad thing to happen too. He has the other kids to entertain him, so maybe that will help time to pass. Can you name some things he really loves-a dvd or something he’s wanted? Maybe ‘happy mail’ will help the inactivity he has to put up with. So sorry Barbara and Niek.

Oh Nicky and poor mommy and daddy!
Quick recover for Nicky!!!!
07.31.08 at 9:47 pm
OUCH!!!!!!!!!! Poor little guy. He sure looks like he’s feeling no pain – motrin?

What a bummer… and right in the middle of summer vacation too. Hope Nicky recovers quickly and the Mom & Dad manage to cope as well.
07.31.08 at 10:53 pm
Owwwwwww! Great expression on his face, I hope it doesn’t hurt too much and he heals up quickly!
07.31.08 at 10:58 pm
My sympathies for each one of you! I know poor Niek feels awful about the whole thing. And poor Nicky will be restricted from those great summer activities he so enjoys, while you are offering consolation to both
07.31.08 at 11:01 pm
I. Don’t. Believe. It. NOW I know what J. meant when she said to be careful with Pelle on the back of the bike. I’m so sorry for all of you, Barbara. Will e-mail tomorrow to ask after the poor critter…
07.31.08 at 11:51 pm
Ouch! Poor Nicky. Sure Niek feels terrible too.
Hope the recovery and healing go smoothly.
07.31.08 at 11:55 pm
oh poor Nicky! Hope he heals up quickly.
08.01.08 at 12:25 am
Oh NO!! Poor little man! Hope he’s running around again soon. Big hug for the poor shocked parents!
08.01.08 at 12:28 am
Forgot to add – love those pillows! That fabric is lovely – would look perfect in my house. LOL

So sorry about your son. He looks happy in the picture though
08.01.08 at 2:12 am
Oh my, poor Nicky — although he does kind of have a smile on his face in the photo. Does he think that that cast is kind of cool?
08.01.08 at 2:12 am
Sorry about what happened to your son. He looks like he is handling it though. I’m sure Niek felt bad. Several years ago I was riding the bike and had my little brother with me. His foot got caught in the spokes and down we went. He still has the scar on his foot and every so often will show me the scar and remind me. He doesn’t remember it though he was only about 2 years old at the time. Barb

Poor Nicky, hope his recovery is fast and that he can ‘walk’ around soon.
08.01.08 at 4:14 am
Oh, no! I hope it heals fast and he won’t have to be non weight bearing for long.
I spent the 1st 6 years of my life in the Netherlands and used to ride on my brother’s bike to school. He had a seat on the back of his bike and one day a car coming towards us looked as thought it was coming a bit too close for comfort and I did what Nicky did, only I didn’t fracture anything but ripped the skin off my one ankle. Man, did it hurt!
08.01.08 at 4:32 am
I guess if you and your husband wanted to spend even more quality time with Nicky, this was the way to accomplish it. Ouch! For all your sakes, I hope he is able to get a walking cast after his first eight days are up. Poor little guy . . .
08.01.08 at 4:52 am
Oh no! Poor Nicky! I hope he heals up quickly!
08.01.08 at 8:29 am
Ouch! I don’t know who to feel most sorry for – Nicky for the injury, Niek for the guilt, or you for having to put up with a bedridden child for over a week…
I know that when I broke my wrist, it healed quicker than expected because I basically mainlined milk for a fortnight (huge cravings I had for the stuff, I was 18 at the time and it wasn’t my favoured beverage LOL) so make sure Nicky has plenty
)
Added by Barbara – Thanks for the tip, Nic. I’ll pour him a glass of it now!
08.01.08 at 8:46 am
Oh poor Nicky and poor Niek. I sure hope Niek’s feeling not too guilty and Nicky, wish him all the best from me!
Love, Marlies
08.01.08 at 8:46 am
Aww the poor thing! He can still raise a smile though, which is great. Hope he is back on his feet soon.
08.01.08 at 1:26 pm
I am so sorry about your little one! I remember those days well having had two roudy, beat em up, tear em up boys! Hoping he heals fast and is in no pain!
08.01.08 at 2:09 pm
Oh la la !!! Poor him …
That is bad … It’s better to follow the doctor order and have him recover completly even though that’s an awful way to spend his vacations … Look like he’s going to be like a king for quite a while !!!
One boy at the school was in a wheelchair for quite a while because of a foot too.
08.01.08 at 2:29 pm
Oh, no! Poor Niek! Nicky will heal in an instant practically–after sorely trying your patience, of course–but poor Niek is likely to be traumatized forever (especially if you bring it up at opportune times–hee–which I KNOW you’d be too nice to do).
When I was about Nicky’s age, my dad and I used to collect bottles on the side of the road on our bikes. We were dirt poor, of course, and Mass. gave I think 2 cents for each bottle turned in then. My dad dearly loves a beer, but there was no money in the budget for beer, so if he could find and turn in enough bottles, he would have enough $ for his weekly single bottle or even two. As his sidekick, I’d ride along with him because my big old bike had one of those huge wire baskets in the front. I was both enthusiastic and clumsy at that age, however, and I wound up crashing my bike and then somehow somersaulting over the handlebars and landing in the heap of broken glass that occurred after all those bottles spilled out. Multiple injuries ensued, with the worst of the cuts requiring stitches. Needless to say, my mom was not amused, and we never went out again. I was so disappointed–I certainly didn’t blame him, but I think my mom did!
08.01.08 at 2:34 pm
oh oh! I had the same accident with my third child many years ago… Bikes are a blessing, but this happens too much! Since then I have ‘fietstassen’.
Wish Nicky well with his foot!! And good luck for you and Niek, first to overcome the shock, and second to keep Nicky busy.
08.01.08 at 4:32 pm
Oh dear! Here’s hoping he gets a walking cast…what a bad way to spend the summer
Totally OT but I love your pillowcases hehe.
08.01.08 at 4:42 pm
Oh no!! The poor thing. I feel so bad for him.
Thinking of you too
08.01.08 at 4:57 pm
Oh my goodness – you must have been horrified! I hope he feels better soon and has a smooth recovery!
08.01.08 at 5:09 pm
OH NO! Poor Nicky! I’m glad you didn’t show pictures of his mangled little foot. I can only imagine how Niek feels.
Good safety reminder. It’s the same as when people ride around on their riding mowers with their kids on their lap. I’ve heard enough horror stories for the sight of that to make me physically ill… I’m glad it wasn’t anything more serious than a green stick fracture. Hugs to Nicky and to Niek.
08.01.08 at 5:12 pm
I don’t think my previous comment went through, so I’ll post a more concise version.
OH NO! Poor Nicky! I feel so badly for both him and Niek.
I can only imagine how you must have felt to see his little foot after that accident. Hugs to the three of you, especially Niek, as I’m sure he feels horrible about the whole thing.
08.01.08 at 5:19 pm
I am so sorry for all of you. You had such lovely plans for you and the kiddos. Give Nicky a hug and Niek a big hug too,he must feel awful.
Know all of us at my house are keeping you and your family in our prayers. For healing and for your sanity.

Poor little guy and poor you. This is going to be a bit of a long haul for all of you.
Mind you he looks like the cat that swallowed the canary in his comfy chair and a nice red cast.
Take care of yourself ,
08.01.08 at 9:18 pm
ouch! sounds like that hurt! darn bikes! glad it wasn’t worse though. Hugs to Nicky .. and tell him I LOVE the red cast! lol
08.02.08 at 3:06 am
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear!! Poor Nicky!! That’s going to slow him (and you) down for a bit. Here’s wishing him the most amazingly speedy recovery ever!! Hope we’re reading about him being up and about again very soon!! (P.S. That red cast is very spiffy!!)
08.02.08 at 6:23 am
Oh my gosh – poor Nicky!! I am sure Niek must feel horrible
08.02.08 at 8:18 am
Poor Nicky! Hopefully he will heal fast! Thinking of you all!
08.02.08 at 5:25 pm
Best wishes to Nicky for a speedy recovery. Barbara, I know this must have been so stressful for you. I hope that you are recovering as well.
08.03.08 at 1:10 am
Oh my…well at least he’s smiling
You can’t keep a good man down!
08.03.08 at 9:33 pm
The ABC of resuscitation: check your own pulse first! I can just imagine how you were feeling. A big hug to you all. Now, take another deep breath & stop worrying. A greenstick fracture is pretty common in growing kids. There probably won’t be any lasting damage to worry about. Like all fractures, they just take time to heal. There will be stories to tell about this event in years to come. I’m sure that at some stages they will be embellished with lots of delight and bravery by small boy growing up. hehe. Enjoy the change in family dynamics between off-spring too.
