It’s actually real summer weather again today. I can hardly believe it. I’m wearing shorts! Hip, hip, hooray!

We spent our morning walking to the supermarket and returning via a detour along a playground. I was surprised that despite the glorious weather, we were the only people in sight. We enjoyed it, and the kids could monopolize all their favorite activities. After lunch, we got busy with our salt dough clay (thanks for the great recipe and idea yesterday in … someone’s blog – my brain is having a flatline moment, sorry!). The kids kindly posed for a picture:

before getting down to business. The art objects are now in the oven and will hopefully all be painted by dinnertime. :)

I finished my first proper cross stitch chart last night using the free download of PC Stitch Pro. It’s a lot faster and better than my usual method of stitching, picking out the places I made mistakes or simply changed my mind, stitching some more, and finally finishing with the nagging doubt in my mind that maybe it would’ve looked better if I’d changed this or tried that. My big question to everyone out there is whether PC Stitch Pro is the program to buy, or whether there’s better software out there. This is strictly for creating charts from scratch, not for converting pictures to charts. I’d appreciate any comments/suggestions you may have. :D

I hope everyone is looking forward to a wonderful weekend!!

  2. Nancy Says:

Your kids are so cute! I love the saying!

  3. Annie Says:

Great little chart. You’ve captured that popular primitive style really well. I’m still using the old graph paper and pencil method so I can’t help you with the software question.

Would you adopt me? It looks like such fun to live at your house. ;-)

  4. Angela Says:

OOooh haven’t played with salt dough in ages!

  5. Angela Says:

whoops forgot to add, I have PC Stitch7 Standard, and it’s pretty cool. I bought it through Patternsonline by saving up gift certificates. Doesn’t look like they still sell it there, hmmm…

  6. Nic Says:

The sun has come out here too, but I think we are forecast the weather breaking this weekend!

I love the chart, but I can’t help on the software – I have an old version of PC Stitch (4, I think) and it’s horribly clunky so if I’m drafting a pattern I use pencil and graph paper!

I have something at home I can actually send you because I never use it or will use it. Send me your address and I’ll get it out to you. I think there’s actually 2 programs…one more simplistic than the other. PS@JumboNY.com

Love the first photo of your children because they are looking directly into the camera and have a very serence calm smiles esp your older son Max, he looks so content and at peace. Happy. I am taking note to return to your blog in a few years when James is older and I have some fun afternoons to plan.

    Enjoy the sun.

Hi Barbara, I use Easy Grapher Pro for my charting, and it works pretty well. You can check it out at http://www.easygrapher.com. It’s convenient for me because you can also graph specialty stitches with it!

  10. Sharon Says:

Great picture of the kids! I love the chart Barbara-I think it looks great!

  11. Redwitch Says:

Great chart! I’ve no experience of stitch software so can’t help there I’m afraid.

Lovely photos of the kids, looks like fun :)

  12. KarenV Says:

  13. staci Says:

I have a play clay recipe that doesn’t require baking and dries a sparkly white (perfect for painting, we made Xmas ornies with it.) If you’re interested, I’ll hunt it down and email it to you :)

  14. Dianne Says:

I want to come play at your house! Looks like the kids had fun with their salt clay. You’ll have to try making bubbles too. The bigger the better. Sean loved them!
I have XS programs on here that I haven’t really tried. I like what you did, it looks great!

  15. Daffycat Says:

Ah, the kids are having a blast! I can’t wait to see their creations!

I have PCStitch Pro and I like it a lot. I tried other programs years ago and could never figure them out; Pro is both really easy and very detailed. I think it’s worth the price tag.

Super pattern you designed! Wow, the creative juices are flowing around your house these days!

  16. Monique Says:

I’m a Pattern Maker Pro girl :) Love your chart– that saying is a cute one; never heard it before!

  17. Ranae Says:

I am so glad to see bloggers using the recipe. Oh! A zoo day, looks like so much fun. I love the chart, and the saying. I love the pcstitch pro, just wish I had the time to use it more.
I cant wait to see what the kiddies made with the clay, zoo animals??

I need to make this dough too: need to find the recipe though ;)

  20. Tanya Says:

Looks like another fun day with you guys!!!

I love PC Stitch – used it for all the years I’ve been designing. I wouldn’t change to another program because I know it’s ins and outs by now. LOL

Your chart is darling – love that verse! Did you make it up? Cute.

    Tanya

  21. Beatrice Says:

What a cute little chart…Good for you nicely done!
I had a look at all the photos of the kids playing and the Zoo. Oh my what fun.

  22. Jennifer Says:

Oooh, salt-dough! Rowen has that look like she wants to take a bite of it. Everyone has to experience that acrid taste just once in a lifetime. That pattern is wonderful. I have never had any luck with computer pattern makers.I guess I just don’t get how to use them properly. I resort to my 20 grid graph paper that I download from Cyberstitchers. Used to be able to buy it in the office supply store (engineering paper) but Cyberstitchers saved my life when my supply ran out and I couldn’t find the paper in any store.

  23. Joanne Says:

Looks like the kids are having a blast, thanks to their wonderful Mum. Love your chart.

  24. Hazel Says:

That’s a fantastic first chart! Well done. I too am looking for some software. xx

  25. ruthsplace Says:

Your kids look like they are having a wonderful time. Cute chart too.

  26. Bliss Says:

I always enjoy seeing what you are working on, but even more, I have really enjoyed watching your children grow up over the last wee while. They are obviously very happy with their lot in life.

I love this pic taken way, way back: http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/7917/1262/1600/etcetera%20006.jpg

  27. leechbabe Says:

A happy fun picture of the kids busy with their dough. thank you for sharing.

  28. Jenna Says:

Thanks for the sale plug, I greatly appreciate it! I think that your new design is coming along nicely. As far as designing software goes, I know that Easy Grapher is the choice of the likes of Just Nan; however, for the price, I enjoy PC Stitch Pro. I think it offers some decent capabilities, especially for what you are looking to do with it. I have even dabbled in using specialty stitches with it and have found that being able to create a design as an overlay of a picture or drawing to actually come in handy sometimes. That’s just my opinion, though.

  29. Love your little chart! Loved also seeing all that the children are doing this Summer. Hugs, Deb

  30. Kim B. Says:
