I haven’t shared much kid-related information during the past few days, which is odd as we have spent a lot of time together. During the sunny days, we usually leave the car parked in front of the house and simply walk everywhere – it is very time consuming, but we see all the ducks and cows and sheep, and speculate about the plants we see, and other than the heart-stopping moments when they dart off too close to the street or something, we enjoy quite a good time.
The school has been busy getting the toys clean for the upcoming summer holiday and they’ve devised rather a clever method for this: The children are allowed to pick out what they want to bring home for a week or weekend … but Mom has to clean it during that period. Naturally, my kids bring home the biggest, most impossible things to clean – teddy bears bigger than a child, boxes containing hundreds of blocks (that cannot go in the dishwasher), and lately they’ve been bringing home things that need mending (I guess those cross stitched bookmarks gave the teachers the wrong idea LOL). I have grumbled a bit, but the kids are really enjoying the “new” toys, and in the end, I have to admit it’s not a bad method. Here are Rowen and Nicky with the blocks and then again with the teddy bears (that need mending).
Arden’s been growing and changing at an incredible rate. He’s of average size, but we all think he looks huge compared to how new-baby-tiny he was just a short while ago. Everyone enjoys making him laugh, and he thinks his older siblings are just amazing. He’s a favorite at the local food bank, and after some serious deliberation, I’ve decided to continue volunteering there with him after the summer holiday; I’ll bring a port-a-crib with me. It’s a hassle, but I don’t want to quit. The people there have become something like an extended family and I really enjoy the chance to help out in a practical way. In the second photo, you can see that although he’s a jolly fellow when awake, he takes his sleeping very seriously.
Max has found a new passion that has, at least temporarily, overshadowed his cross stitching, but we don’t mind at all. He’s suddenly discovered the joy of reading – something I had despaired of ever happening. For a long time, his teachers (and us) worried that he might be dyslexic because he simply couldn’t “get” how to read. Each time he encountered a word, it was as if it were the first time and he had to go through the effort of identifying the letters, matching the letters to a sound, sounding out the letters together … it was very frustrating for all involved. And then, thanks to his biological father’s family, the Geronimo Stilton series of books was discovered and a new book lover was born. We’re so happy, we hardly dare breathe for fear of distracting him from his new-found pleasure!
The workplace has beenĀ a mixed bag. As you’ve probably gathered, I have been a SAHM since Arden’s birth, going in to the office only on a couple of urgent occasions. However, they want me back in on a regular basis after the summer holidays. We’re going to discuss one day a week, in which I’d be at the office and Niek would work from home. I don’t know what to expect, as the company has gone through some major reorganizations in the past couple of years that have seriously curtailed the freedoms that I wanted & needed when I went to work there. I also don’t want to give up certain things, like the food bank, but I realize that concessions to the realities of the hiccuping economy are necessary. At least I have the summer break yet to enjoy.
I hope the weekend has included plenty of moments both of joy and of relaxation for you and yours. I’ll be back on Monday with an update of my birds … I guess that’ll be a *bird food post.

That is great news about Max’s reading. Luke is a very reluctant reader and way which we have worked around it is to get the books and CDs and get him to listen to them and read along with the book. Works especially well in the car. Another thing we do is if he wants some time on the computer we get him to read a chapter of a book to us first. Nothing like bribery and corruption!!!! LOL

Very cute photos! Interesting concept from the kids’ school- here they probably pay people like Sean to do the toy cleaning during the summer- (thought Sean is done with those duties now). I question having stuffed toys in classrooms as you know they can’t be cleaned properly and kids sneeze, wipe noses and hands on things….ugh. Plastic is better. : ) I believe Sean’s kindergarten had one stuffed teddy and they weren’t allowed to play with it, but could sit it with it on their lap if they were the person of the day or something like that (it was a long time ago). Do you have Febreze over there?
Good for you with helping out with the food bank. Sean did that one summer too.

Ingenious way to get the school toys clean – sorry you ended up with the mending jobs and hard to clean stuff.
Great news about Max reading.
As usual the pictures of your children are too adorable. I don’t think I will need sugar in my cup of tea now I’ve had my dose of sweetness from your blog.

Barbara, your children are beautiful! Woo Hoo with the reading…it’s wonderful to watch these little people make all kinds of growth! My daughter is dyslexic, so I know the anxiety you have when they have some “trouble”.
Thanks for all your lovely comments at my little blog! I appreciate it….
Take care and hug those kids.

Barbara, I was looking at you wish list and realized I have “Honor” by Carriage House Samplings. It has one slightly bent corner and I only used it once. I would be more than happy to give it to you if you are interested. Just let me know.

Added by Barbara: I’ve tried to email you saying “yes!” but it’s been bounced back as undeliverable. Will continue trying. Thanks for you generous offer!

Hmm, not sure about the stuffed animals. I’d make them disappear. LOL I’m not too much of a germaphobe but sometimes
) At a library event recently they brought out all these stuffed bears for the kids to hold if they got unruly, the library said, and “have them sit in your lap with one”. The mom next to me asked me if I thought they’d been cleaned in awhile – who knows. Kinda freaks me out but then Zack wasn’t too interested in it, thank goodness. Ok – nuff said on that subject! Sorry.
Great pics of your cutie patootie kids. Arden must make them smile heaps of course at that food bank. How could they not?

Congratulations on your new reader! My son is starting to really get it too! It is really exciting for us. (Sebastian is 7.5). He stills loves me to read to him and reading is a lot of work for him now, but he is improving daily! We are trying to have him read a book a day during the summer. I find it really difficult during the school year to find time every day to do this…
Happy day to you and your beautiful family!!!

Oh, my, I remember those blocks!! What were they called?? I remember at some point coloring on one with a marker and using it as a “stamp” to put a dotted pattern on my dollhouse…crafting at an early age, LOL!
Barbara, my DH was just the same as Max. Reading just didn’t do it for him, then one day something in his brain “clicked” and he was reading Lord of the Rings in elementary school. =)

Congratulations on Max’s newfound love of reading. That’s so wonderful! I hope that you are able to work out a work schedule that works for you and all of the members of your family. Can I squeeze in the word ‘work’ one more time?
