I did not fall off the planet – it’s been a bit busy, with Niek not home as often as usual, and to “save” time, I’ve been totally offline for a couple of days. Hopefully, our normal programming will now resume. ;)

There is so much to tell and share that I’ll need at least two posts cover it all (and avoid writing an entry roughly the length of War and Peace). Today I’ll share some stitching and a wonderful gift box from Tanya.

My partner, Wendy Jo, received her squares for the Independence Day exchange at Fair and Square and thank heavens, she liked them. I couldn’t find exactly what I wanted to stitch – I wanted a subject that made me feel very patriotic, but that was neither too primitive nor too fussy. I’m one of those people whose hair stands up whenever I hear The Star Spangled Banner – it makes me feel intensely American – and being from the New England region, I have a special fondness for the Liberty Bell. So here is my square, using a freebie from Erica Michaels and some text from The Star Spangled Banner. I was quite pleased with the result.

I’ve also been working on Thine Forever, but the Monday deadline that I set for myself has passed. I didn’t stitch over the weekend, being quite tied up with the kids, and had no opportunity on Monday, either. I got the turbo needles out yesterday and nearly finished it – I would have, except I didn’t know the maiden name of the bride-to-be so I couldn’t stitch her initials (which meant I couldn’t keep the rest of the text centered till I could figure out the count for that line). I’ll finish it today and take to to the framer tomorrow – that should still be sufficient time to have it ready for the wedding. Sorry for the wonky colors – it’s a very gray day here and my camera is being temperamental.

Thine Forever continued

And now onto the really fun stuff – a box of goodies for Arden! Tanya had apologized for being “late” in sending a gift to Arden – which of course is completely silly of her, as gifts are neither required nor expected, and therefore cannot be late. Yesterday, the mailman brought two packets, one of which was from Tanya, and Max and I had a lot of fun opening it after we put the wee beasties to bed. Arden quickly chose his favorite item from the gifts – a ring with beads inside that make a lovely noise when shaken. Just look at that happy face!

what a happy boy!

But you really should’ve seen my face when Max and I had unpacked everything! Tanya, you are too generous! Arden now has a wonderful selection of clothing from sizes that fit now, up to 18 months. Thank you!

This morning I had fun dressing him in his little Osh Kosh overalls (I attempted to wear nothing but Osh Kosh overalls when I was a kid – I even had a little denim cap to match). Here he is, right after his breakfast bottle, full of smiles.

And for tomorrow, pictures of our weekend! The younger three kids and myself enjoyed the Goudse Hofstedendagen here in our neighborhood while Max and Niek indulged in some sailing up in Friesland. Stay tuned!

And a contest!

There’s still time to head over to Stitch Pink and enter your name for the drawing of a beautiful M Designs Survivor Tree ornament!

Here’s what I want to know about, “and being from the New England region, I have a special fondness for the Liberty Bell.” Because I am from New England and have no special fondness for anything in the mid-Atlantic–and I live here now! In fact, I could probably throw a rock and hit it from my office. I’m starting to have a burning desire to understand your fondness for the Liberty Bell. And does it extend to Liberty Bell tchotchkes? Because I know where to get those…and someone has a birthday coming. ;)

Added by Barbara: I guess I should’ve put in a list of the patriotic things I feel fond of, in relation to being from New England. I didn’t think that a square with Plymouth Rock stitched on it would really look very nice, and the Bunker Hill Monument isn’t really much of an improvement. ;) I would’ve really liked to have done something related to Paul Revere’s ride, but that’ll have to be for another year – I was a bit short on inspiration when it came to charting a horse and Mr. Revere. Sadly, tchotchkes of any sort are short-lived in this household of greedy little hands. LOL!

    Hi Barbara,
What a cute smile Arden has with the toy. Glad the clothes will come in handy – he’s already adorable in those overalls. I love Osh Kosh!! Enjoy :) Your stitching is lovely as usual.

Happy early birthday wishes to you :)
    Hugs,
    Tanya

Arden is positively smashing in his new OshKosh. don’t you just love those soft shoes. Both my grandson’s wore those when small and they were so nice.
Your stitching is lovely as always.
Was wondering where you had been this past few days. I am amazed that with your busy children and their activities that you have time to blog at all.

Arden is full from the joy of life! Every time I see a picture he looks so happy!

Love your cross stitch projects. The whole wedding design is great and you have been very creative with your Independenceday stitching. I can’t see myself cross stitch something from our ‘wilhelmus’, but maybe I’m too Dutch…

  5. Carol Says:

Great job on the square – and wow, Thine Forever looks fabulous!

  6. staci Says:

Thine Forever is gorgeous and so are the F&S you stitched! But Arden is the scene stealer in this post, lol! Aren’t OshKosh the cutest?! It was a sad day when my kiddos were ‘too old’ to wear them! How sweet of Tanya :)

  7. staci Says:

ooops, forgot to add that I can’t wait to see your fabrics that you’ve dyed with organics. I imagine the beets would make a lovely purply/rose color? But I’m curious about the beans…what kind are you using?
Added by Barbara: Actually, the beets give a brown color, even though the beet water is pink/red/orange. My last attempt, I got an excellent distressed result that I’m quite pleased with. :)
The beans I’m going to try are the tiny black beans, dried. I dumped the water too quickly last time …

Funny thing, I stitched a Liberty Bell for a charity quilt a few years ago. I like it the real one and have seen it a few times. I think it’s definitely patriotic and yours looks great!
Thine Forever is really lovely and will be a wonderful gift.
And finally, look at Arden all smiley and sweet. He so reminds me of Sean at that age! Makes my heart pine for those days. Now he can be rather grumpy (told him to get more serious about a job-it’s been 3 weeks and he got snotty with me and then apologized).
Yeah, when they get bigger than you and talk back-yikes!!! ; )

Thine Forever is a beautiful piece, the colors so earthy and natural.

Tanya is certainly a sweetheart! Arden, and all little boys, are so cute in denim overalls. When my twins were toddlers we took a long camping vacation to Arizona. I often put them in shortalls because we could easily grab the straps from behind as they tried to walk away. So I have an especial fondness for overalls. :D

Oh, Barbara, I so enjoyed catching up after a few tormented weeks… Here’s a warm smile coming your way, all the way from Norway! Isn’t it amazing how Arden is changing… a real little boy he is now! Reading your blog is so soothing for the soul :)

  11. Michele Says:

what great memories I have of Oshkosh overalls .. my boys lived in them :) Arden looks adorable as always!

Thine Forever is lovely!! They will really enjoy it :)

  12. Kim B. Says:

What a beautiful square you stitched up! I’ve never seen that before! When I really listen to the words of the Star Spangled Banner, I must admit I tear up!

What an incredible gift you got from Tanya! And your little guy looks too sweet in those overalls! Arden is clearly a treasured member of the stitching community :)

  13. Debby Says:

I love all of your photos here! Your little one is so cute!! Your stitching is just awesome!! What a great job! Yes the lines in the blocks that I am doing seem to take forever. They are 92 stitches square and of course the frog had to come by as I got the right hand line one thread over to the left too much so I had to frog it out. Glad to finally be doing something inside the square!! Your blog is just really pretty!

  14. Redwitch Says:

Lovely gifts for Arden from Tanya, he is such a cutiepie :)

Lovely stitching too, I just don’t know how you have time to blog and stitch at all, let alone give thought to designing your own squares and centering initials etc. You’re a wonder woman Barbara!

  15. Karen Says:

WOW! What a great gift! And Arden looks soooo cute :)

  16. Danica Says:

Barbara – I love your patriotic square … what a different and great idea. Nice job on Thine forever :) . Arden is such a cutie, he’s getting big.

  17. Jennifer Says:

Love the patriotic square. Now you’ve gotten me on a patriotic kick. That’s all I want to stitch lately.
What wonderful gifts from Tanya. I wish Osh-Gosh came in womens’ size also!!

  18. Patti Says:

Ay carumba that baby boy is cute! I like your choice in stitching for the F&S patriotic round.

  19. Joanne Says:

Thine Forever is looking wonderful Barbara. And that boy in his new clothes, is just so cute. LOL at Nicki and Rowens conversation, aren’t kids fantastic with the things that they say!!

  20. I just love seeing babies in Oshkosh overalls. Sooooo cute!! (Arden, you’re a great model!) And “Thine Forever” is simply magnificent (gorgeous, wonderful, fabulous, stupendous, . . . fill in your favorite adjective here because they ALL fit)!

  21. FaithAnnNB Says:

What a lovely package!! Great pic of Arden enjoying his new toy too :)

  22. Judy Says:

    Hi Barbara,

Well, Thine Forever looks fantastic. It’s such a pretty design.
It’ll be a big hit with the bride and groom I bet. We loved the
3 wedding samplers that we got, all very different from each
other. Stitched pieces really make a house a home I think.

Well, isn’t Arden the best dressed baby in all of the Netherlands?
Look at that happy face. He obviously enjoys being up to date
and totally chic in his wardrobe. What a wonderful and generous
gift. And I agree, babies look adorable in coveralls.

    Cheers.

  23. Mylene Says:

    WOW! That’s a great package!

Well done on Thyne Forever, it’s lovely!!

  24. ruthsplace Says:

Thine Forever (I know I say it every time you show it) is lovely! I like your Liberty Bell too. I have actually visited the liberty bell.

And dear Arden is just adorable.

  25. Jenna Says:

  26. Jenna Says:

Oh, and Tanya is quite a sweetheart to send all of those clothes! Arden looks great in his new overalls.

  27. leechbabe Says:

A wonderful gift for Arden. Tanya is a lovely person.

Thine Forever is looking great. You amaze me being able to stitch and look after kids and still find time to blog!
