Happy Queen’s Day, everyone! And guess, what …. It didn’t rain!! Sure, it looked like rain all day, which did a wonderful job of keeping the crowds down, and it was often very chilly, but it was dry!!
Queen’s Day is of course a patriotic holiday. Two of our kids got into the spirit with a bit of face-painting (our number two son was having a sulky day) and they look so very Dutch!
Queen’s Day is also, very importantly, a chance for everyone to sell their junk, spreading it out on blankets downtown. Sort of like everyone in town having a yardsale in the same place at the same time.
It’s a lot of fun to wander up and down, looking at this and at that. Last year, I got lucky and picked up a hard-to-find collection of traditional Dutch cross stitch patterns. This year I found a truly wonderful book of folk art paintings of Dutch scenes by Dutch artists (for only 2 Euros!) and I simply have to share my favorites (scroll over the pictures for the artist’s names):
I also got my arm twisted into buying – for 25 cents – a book of children’s stories written and illustrated by a Gypsy named Beshlie, and here’s one of my favorite illustrations from that book. (I think I’ll keep this for myself, actually!). The kids, as always, were able to choose a toy for a Euro or under. That was where the trouble with Nicky started – after he chose a very cute gorilla, he decided he didn’t want it any more and plauged us all with a long, monotonous wail for the rest of the day. There’s one in every crowd, isn’t there?
Arden enjoyed watching the clouds and tree branches pass by overhead, in a sort of semi-trance like state. Every time we stopped for more than a few minutes, he’d begin to squirm, eager to continue. Once home, he had plenty of energy for more tummy time and is now laying beside me as I type this.
On the subject of Dutch art, here is my own humble little contribution.
We have a chicken in the oven that smells pretty good, and the older kids are catching up on some TV they missed earlier.
I hope that whatever you’re doing, it brings you a feeling of satisfied contentment.
Thank you very much for your kind comments regarding my choice of color changes for “Reader” – and in saying how incredibly adorable Arden is!

In our family it’s Pierre who gets moody that way sometimes … It’s amazing how children can get moody for a little thing.
It’s great you had a wonderful queen day !!! I love the illustration of the little mouse ( but if you saw my new start, you already noticed I love this kind of mouse
)

Glad to hear you had a good day, Barbara, and I hope Nicky has “desulked”
Arden is adorable, I love seeing every picture of him, even though I don’t always have time to leave a comment

I just love your pictures here! It must be such an adventure living in the Netherlands! Do you see the fields of tulips that they always talk about there? I so wish we were coming there too so I could visit with you!!! I love the Dutch Folkart that you show here! It is beautiful! I wonder if there are any of those in cross stitch!! Hope you had a wonderful Queen’s day!! Debby

Happy Queen’s Day to you and your family. It looks and sounds like so much fun. Did you run across any Anton Pieck’s in your travels. I absolutely love his stuff and have 5 3-D paper tole pictures of his work that I have done. I love all the depth and detail.
Added by Barbara: I also love Anton Piek’s illustrations! We have a collection of fairy tales illustrated by him. His work tends to go a bit more expensive, as he remains very popular here. If you’re interested in anything specific, though, let me know and I’ll keep an eye out!

Great pictures of the kids. It’s been year now that i didn’t go to town during queens day. I find it too busy, unless as i was advised to go at 7AM instead of at 10AM.
Well, did took the kids for the game here at the village in the afternoon but it started raining i didn’t take my camera with me.
Have a fine day, here’s sunny but windy.

What a neat event! I love those ‘flea’ market type things. I hear ya about the stuff being mostly junk though!
Sorry Nicky was having a bad day, maybe he just wasn’t his jolly self.

Looks like it was a very good day indeed
And I must agree there IS one in every crowd!

Happy Queen’s Day! I was reading in The Other Boleyn Girl about how the maids awaken the queen with singing and dancing under her window on May 1. In our world here, it is (or would have been) my parents’ 48th wedding anniversary. Our weather looks like yours – cloudy but not raining today

Sounds like you all (or at least most of you) had a wonderful Queens’s day. Sometimes having a bit of overcast/chance of rain works out great for those types of things. Keeps the crowds down a bit, and depending on the season can help keep the heat down a bit too. Fun pictures, looks like lots of fun and interesting things to see and do.
