This morning began with an elusive … and very unpleasant … scent. While Niek tracked it down (my sinuses are doing their thing again), the mail arrived and included some elusive items from an ONS that I need for gifts (more to follow). And while all this was going on, the sun came out after two days of very stormy weather – hooray for sunshine! As I type these words, the clouds are already moving back in, but I’m happy to have just seen the sun for a bit. It certainly is better than nothing!
On the stitching front, I didn’t do too much stitching last night but I’m really loving this design. I did read a bit further in Excession, by Iain M. Banks – the novel is very enjoyable and while a bit more of a challenge than Inversions was, it’s not too taxing for my sluggish synapses. It’s occurred to me that I ought to get a little nesting stack of books gathered up for when Arden is born, for those first cuddly days together. When Nicky was born, I made my way through the Robert Jordan series. I was banished to bed for a few days due to pelvic problems and had lots of reading time. I think that when Rowen was born, I did little other than stare at her for several days straight! I was also on strict bedrest for a few days, that time due to some blood loss issues, but I was just so fascinated by her that I couldn’t take my eyes off her. And of course baby Nicky spent some time playing up in my room, too.
With three kids already on Planet Earth, reading anything longer than a magazine article is probably going to amount to nothing more than wishful thinking. LOL!

On the family front, there are some big happenings! My dad’s partner, Mary, had her birthday yesterday. I’m terribly embarassed to admit that in my limited-brain-wave-state yesterday, I forgot to call. I’m sorry, Mary!! I’m hoping that she and Daddy enjoyed a wonderful day together. Also yesterday, my Mom took my great Aunt Hattie to a nursing home in Bar Harbor. It’s been coming, I’ve known it was inevitable for awhile, but I really dreaded to share the news. As nursing homes go, this one really is special – an old Bar Harbor mansion on the ocean with beautiful common rooms, lots of large windows, and a dedicated staff (that includes one of my mom’s sisters!). My mom’s family hails from ‘the island’, so Aunt Hattie will always have family very close at hand and I hope my aunts and cousins will make plenty of time to visit. Sadly, Hattie’s physical strength has continued to deterioriate and her mental faculties are not what they were either. In short, she can no longer live alone and refuses to allow a daily nurse care for her at her own home. Please think good thoughts for her, and if anyone is interested in writing you can use the same address and my Mom will ensure the cards reach her.
Something of a rant:
Back to stitching, I feel like it’s sort of a civic duty to give a two-thumbs-down report on my experiences with La Boite á Broderie. I had ordered a considerable amount of floss, ribbon, patterns, and even a kit from them after waffling over my order for so long that I wanted everything. They have some ribbon and floss sets, dyed-to-match, that I thought would make really wonderful gifts for a few upcoming birthdays for which I knew I wouldn’t be able to stitch a gift, so I ordered several sets in various people’s favorite colors (or simply colors that made me think of the people in question). Anyway, my order came in and because it really was rather large, I took the extra step of checking the contents off against the shipping invoice and discovered that one floss (which matched one of the ribbons) was missing. Well, no big deal, right? I contacted the company that day to say that I loved my order but was missing this floss, gave the details, and asked them to please pop it off to me at their earliest convenience. The better part of a week went by with no response, so I sent another email, mentioning that this was intended for a gift and I would be needing it fairly soon, blah-blah. Still no response. Nothing. So I spent a few days sending an email more or less daily, and STILL no response. By then, I was pretty mad. But I ran out of the blasted Egyptian Nights silk that I was using on yet another gift and couldn’t get the same dye lot from anywhere else, so I swallowed my pride and ordered it from the same ONS and included a note to the effect that I was STILL missing such-and-such a floss and would they please include it with this order so they wouldn’t even have to pay for the shipping. And guess what? No response, and no floss included in the order. So my strong advice to anyone looking for an ONS is to avoid La Boite á Broderie. Rant over!
Niek and I are going to (try to) go out tonight without the kids. His youngest brother has volunteered to take Nicky and Rowen overnight (Max is at his biological father’s), so the plan is to take them over after dinner and pick them up around breakfast time. I don’t think I’ve ever spent a night away from Rowen … she slept over at Niek’s parents once as a baby, but I think that was for a nap (and Niek can’t remember). I have pretty strangely mixed feelings about being away from my babies, but it is something I’ve wanted to try for a long time. Of course at 32 weeks pregnant, there won’t be much wildness going on
but it should be a good opportunity to spend a few hours simply enjoying one another’s company without any distractions.
Thank you for coming to visit with me today! I hope you’re enjoying a restorative Saturday!

I don’t blame you at all about being very upset about non existant customer service. That stinks. Hope you enjoyed your quiet evening. Your angel looks terrific. More people have commented about my skater. They love her!

Ahhhh….an evening alone, I’ve not had one of those in well…hmmm….like 5 years. BUT I’m sure it’s going to be fine for the kiddos. You know how kids can get all ramped up about the smalles things! So enjoy your time Barbara, soon you won’t have a lot of it alone even with yourself in the bathroom with four kids! Coming from a mother that knows

Enjoy your quiet evening

I hope your Auntie will do well in her new residence. Since her niece will be around, that is a plus. Sounds like a nice place too.
I see the ONS has a forum. I’d leave a comment there and maybe, they will see it. Or can you call on the phone? I hate when pleas fall on deaf ears.
I bet you are having a relaxing evening-quiet can be good too.

I’ve had an experience like that with an OLN store too. Bad news isn’t it. I’m glad you told us about your experience.
I hope your aunt settle into her new home. It sounds like your mom chose a good one for her. It’s always a worry having to choose something like that isn’t it.

Good for you about taking the initiative to send the kids away for one night so that you can have some time with your parnter! Especially with a baby on the way I’m sure its the best thing for you, because once that baby is here you’re not going to have the luxury for awhile!
Thanks for ranting about the ONS… the only way we’re going to know about a bad apple is if someone tells us. Some of these owners have no idea how powerful the internet, blogs, and bullitin boards, etc. are.
Sorry you didn’t get your floss!

Too bad for your order
I hate when they don’t answer us. They like our orders though
I asked on a french forum and they said they had great customer service there … They also advice to write on the ONS forum .
A night alone with your husband: is it reasonable to party at 32 weeks?
lol I hope you have a great evening. Your kids should be exciting to sleep over
Mine were more exciting than me the first time they did it
Sorry to hear about your great aunt. It is sad but I hope she will be in a great place.

Thanks for the heads up on the ONS. I just had trouble with one about making a sale adjustment refund. They didnt have to but they said they would and never did. So after many email tags I wrote that It was my fault for not waiting for the sale and there was many other ONS that I could order from and would think second about ordering from them, the next email was a refund
It wasnt a small order by the way. How’s that for a run on sentence, lol.
Hope you have nice relaxing time with each other.

Did you track down the stench? In our house, it is usually left over cat food in the garbage can. That canned food gets rotten fast! I am glad some elusive items arrived – that is always a treat. I hope your aunt does well in the NH. Keep us posted! OH, and hope you and Niek got to go out and enjoy yourselves too. Meanwhile, we had such a rainy day on Tuesday that it looked like 7:30 AM around here ALL day!! {{{HUGS}}} It has been a cold start to November here, for sure!

Enjoy your night off. It’s so important to have time alone with your spouse when you have kids. Sorry about your ONS experience. Happy Stitching

I hope you have a wonderful with Niek. Max is doing a great job with his stitching, you will have to place your stash under lock and key!!! I hope Aunt Hattie adapts well into the nursing home, I posted a card to her on Tuesday, I hope she gets some joy from it.

Here’s to a wonderful evening with Niek sans children!
Hugs.

Hey Barbara – I hope you thoroughly enjoy your evening alone with Niek! Rest, relax, enjoy!
Your stitched angel (Goode Huswife, right?) is coming along nicely.
I finally got to the post office today so your package is on its way. I hope it arrives in record time like the last one did!
Cold and wet here too – winter is definitely coming to MN. I think we did see the sun for a few minutes today though!
Hugs!

Sorry you didn’t get your floss
but thanks for the info on the ONS. I don’t have a LNS here in Dubai and rely on ONS for all my stash buying so I tend to use ones that have been recommended by other stitchers
Hope you had a fabulous evening with Niek

A quiet evening without the kiddos…sounds pretty nice! We haven’t had one of those since Kiddo #2 came along. When she gets a bit older, we’ll have to send both girls to Camp Grammie and PawPaw for a couple nights.
Maybe I’m weird, but I’m curious…what was the elusive smell? We have a few of those from time to time around here…once it was a dead mouse in the garage, once it was some chicken parts I’d accidentally left on the kitchen counter instead of putting in the trash can outside…and sometimes it’s been a bad diaper.
Sounds like that ONS is a real gem. I’d definitely steer clear of them!

I love this angel you are stitching! It really is beautiful. Hope you get some sunshine soon!
11.11.07 at 10:30 am
Dear Barbara, have a lovely Sunday! (((hugs)))
11.11.07 at 11:51 am
I love how the angel is coming along. I don’t normally like angels, but for tombstone ones I make an exception – I have “Abigail Adams” here. I’m going to hang her next to the window when she’s framed, as we overlook a funeral home …
I hope your Aunt Hattie settles into her new home comfortably, It’s never an easy decision to make, but it’s probably the best for everyone concerned to maintain each one’s quality of life.
11.11.07 at 2:19 pm
First of all, I have to ask: what WAS that smell?
As for the ONS, BOO to them. Last week I had a very, very different experience, which I will talk about in my next post. If you’re interested…
How was your night out with Niek? And how did it feel to be away from three of your babies for that long? Being away from mone for a whole night? I don’t think I could handle it.
Sorry to hear about Aunt Hattie, but it sounds as if she’s in the best place possible. Good vibes travelling at lightening speed

Your angel is looking great! That is sad news about your Aunt, but the nursing home in Bar Harbor does sound like a very good option. I hope you had a lovely evening with Niek. And I would love a storm over here ~ it’s still 80 degrees!
11.11.07 at 5:37 pm
Sorry to hear about Aunt Hattie, but the place she is going to sounds good and very interesting at the same time. I hope she will do well there. Your angel of tulips is gorgeous, I love it.
11.12.07 at 2:48 pm
Wow! Christine has ordered from me several times and I had no idea her ONS was like this. I know that her kids keep her pretty busy and of course that is no excuse because I understand your predicament but sure hope this was a fluke. Who knows. Tanya

I’m sorry to hear about your bad experience. It’s really hard for me to believe that a fellow shopowner would behave that way. Perhaps their email isn’t working? Something must be wrong somewhere; you don’t just ignore your customers!
